I can honestly say that I've never understood this either, from the very first time I read Twilight. The only reasons I can come up with are that, as for Bella's scent , the nomads could have been standing far enough away that they didn't smell her until the wind blew her scent in their direction. Edward didn't even get a good whiff of Bella until she passed right by his desk in Biology class, and even then, the air from the heater blew her scent his way. As for her heartbeat, they could have been attributing that sound to the animals in the nearby woods or something. I also wondered how they could not have noticed her eye color, if nothing else. Her eyes are obviously neither red nor gold nor black. The only thing (again) that I can think of is maybe they just weren't paying that much attention. They were probably focused more on Emmett, Jasper, and Carlisle, since they were the ones in front. Lame, I know, but it's all I got.
