In Twilight when James, Laurent, And Victoria come into the clearing they dont notice Bella. james only realises she is human when he smells her.
I dont understand?
Surely the fact that vampires have have heightened senses, they would have heard her heart beating and smelt her from further away? Especially with James being a tracker.
Im confused.

I read somewhere that that Bella's scent didn't appeal to James alot until the wind blew, when the scent was enhanced.

I've always wondered the same thing! In the book Alice says she could smell Bella from across the field (in teh movie rosalie get that line). You would think they would have noticed too!

Oh well, we stil love it!

It could be possible that none of them had considered the idea of other vampires ever befriending a human so when they came upon such a large coven of vampires, the last thing they were doing was looking for signs of a human. They were all probably more distracted sizing up the Cullens and not paying attention to the faint signs of Bella being human until the wind emphasized it. Just a thought, anyway.

I can honestly say that I've never understood this either, from the very first time I read Twilight. The only reasons I can come up with are that, as for Bella's scent , the nomads could have been standing far enough away that they didn't smell her until the wind blew her scent in their direction. Edward didn't even get a good whiff of Bella until she passed right by his desk in Biology class, and even then, the air from the heater blew her scent his way. As for her heartbeat, they could have been attributing that sound to the animals in the nearby woods or something. I also wondered how they could not have noticed her eye color, if nothing else. Her eyes are obviously neither red nor gold nor black. The only thing (again) that I can think of is maybe they just weren't paying that much attention. They were probably focused more on Emmett, Jasper, and Carlisle, since they were the ones in front. Lame, I know, but it's all I got.

I've wondered about that, also. Maybe Rosalie's "I'd smell her from across the field" comment was supposed to be sarcastic. But that wouldn't explain why they didn't hear her heart. It had to be beating very fast and hard, I'd think.
Fiction. Haha!
