There was, however, one problem. I knew I couldn't just leave with Nessie. The Cullens would think we'd been kidnapped and come after us, including Seth. I had to keep him safe, away from all that. And the best way to do that, was to hurt him. As I made my way to his house it was like being in a dream. Everything was clearer than ever, certain things leapt out at me. The light from the window, the door knocker as I reached for it to tap three times on the door. He opened it and his smile was heartbreaking. I tried to keep my face indifferent as I said,
"Can I talk to you for a minute." His face fell for a second, but he followed me out towards the spot where I'd spoken with Edward only hours ago. By the time we got there, he was looking worried.
"Seriously, Anna, what's up? You've been sending me crazy" He reached out to touch my arm, but I flinched away.
"Look, Seth," I began, I'd had this whole speech in my head, but now I was finding it hard to even open my mouth. Looking into his concerned, lovely face my resolve faltered for a second. But then another face filled my mind, the most beautiful, innocent child; tears rolling down his face as a shadowy figure loomed over him.
"Tonight will be my last in Forks. I'm leaving and I won't be coming back." The silence rang in my ears as Seth drew a deep breath,
"Why?" he asked, and his voice was thick with emotion.
"I'm just.. a little bored." I replied, trying to sound as uncaring as possible. "I mean, it's ben quite fun and everything, but I've got all this potential now, this future. I want to get out and do something, instead of just hiding out here."
"This has all just been a bit of fun to you. A bit of a laugh." He said, and there was no accusataion in his tone, just shock. Shock and something I couldn't quite place. He sounded embarassed.
"Yeah." I replied, forcing a smile to my cold lips. "What did you really think it was?" Unable to bear it any more, I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm and whirled me around.
"I don't believe that. That's not you." Damn it. I would have to be a better actress if I wanted to keep him safe.
