I looked at her sleeping form, and I had a sudden thought. Could now be the moment for me to take her? She looked so angelic as she slept, I didn't know if I could bring myself to do it. But then I thought of my own child, how much would he have grown in my absence? She sniffed in her sleep and I was pulled out of my reverie and realised I was still standing next to her bed. I was a woman torn in two. Half of me was screaming at me to take my chance while I had it, but another was yelling to leave this innocent child to sleep, safe with her family. I leaned in towards her, and I was surprised to see that I was shaking with nerves. So when I heard the front door open quietly I jumped up and ran downstairs, assuming a defensive crouch.
"Hey! Hey! Cool it!" I heard a familiar voice from the doorway, "It's just me, Seth" I relaxed as he walked cautiously into the room, hands held up, "You're not going to attack me, right?"
"No." I replied, "But I might if you don't stop looking do damn afraid!"
"Got it." He smiled, lowering his arms and coming over to me and slumping on the couch, "I've been sent to keep you company. Apparently the others don't need me running so we thought I should come see you. We figured you'd probably be a bit worried. Understatement of the century." He grinned at me and I sat down next to him.
"Well, much though I hate to spend my evening with a dog," I pretended to grimace, and he feigned offence, "I'm pretty glad you're here. I didn't fancy my chances against this mystery stalker."
"Don't worry, as a man it is my duty to protect the womenfolk!" He said, puffing out his chest. I tapped him gently on the shoulder, he winced.
"The womenfolk can look after themselves thank you very much" I replied indignatly, "Maybe just not me. Right now. Against this particular opponent. I bet I could take you though. Weedy little thing you are."
"I don't doubt it," he chuckled, "When Bella was a newborn she broke my collar bone."
"No way!" I exclaimed "Why?"
"Well she was actually going for Jake's neck, I sort of got in the way. Devotion to my alpha, you know."
"Sure sure." I said,
"You sound like Jake now! Bella went absolutely skitz when she found out Jake had imprinted on Nessie, but what made her go for the throat was when she heard him call her Nessie. As far as I can remember she said, "You named my baby after the Loch Ness monster?" Then went in for the kill. Though I can't really blame her, she was only about an hour old."
I laughed and tried to imagine Bella being vicious, especially towards Jake.
"So what's your story? If you don't mind me asking." I didn't know what it was, but I found it so hard to lie to him. Harder than lying to any of the Cullens, but I knew I had to do it,
"It's really not that interesting." I said, "I was out hiking when this really odd man came up to me. He told me I was about to die. Then he just bit me, I felt like I was being drained, but then suddenly he just stopped. I don't know why. The last thing I remember is seeing him running away. I'm a mystery, wrapped in a riddle, surrounded by an enigma." I tried to make my laugh sound lighthearted, but it didn't convince him. I could see the sympathy in his eyes. I was about ready to scream,
"Will everyone stop feeling sorry for me already!" I screamed, and he flinched away,
"Sorry. It's kind of hard not to you know."
"No, don't apologise. I just want to forget I was ever human. I just want to get on with my... well, not my life but you know what I mean."
I smiled weakly and he hesitantly touched my arm. His skin was flame on mine, but I liked the warmth. For an infinite second our eyes met and he leaned forward a tiny amount. Then,
"Nothing!" Emmett thundered from the doorway.
