Bella put Renesmee to bed on the couch and we waited anxiously for the others to come back. The silence was deafening. I thought about my mission, how long would I have to wait before I saw my son again? How soon before I could bring myself to hurt that innocent, loving little girl. But I had to, I knew I had to, and I had no doubt within myself that I would. I would do anything for my child. Suddenly, I sensed something moving rapidly towards us, and saw what looked like a projecton coming from the window, it was hurtling towards Alice at a remarkable speed, and I saw in it, Bella on the floor shaking and Edward with an empty look in his eyes. I knew why Alice would have seen that vision. I knew that it was because of me. I wanted them to see me for what I was, I wanted them to cast me from the house and condemn me for being a spy, a traitor. I wanted them to kill me. But I couldn't let that happen. If I died, so did my son. I had to stop Alice from seeing what I was seeing. I caught the vision in mid air, and threw it away. I looked over at Alice, who was still sitting looking anxiously out of the window. She hadn't seen it. Neither her or Bella had noticed the chaos that had been going on in my mind. I was safe. For now. I looked at Nessie, and Bella looked at me. An expression of sudden understnding came to her face, and she touched my arm gently,
"Nessie means a lot to all of us, especially Rose. I know all she ever wanted was to have a family. A child. I was so lucky. I got everything I ever wanted. It's hard to deal with that, knowing that you'll never have children, but know that one day you will find someone or something that will take that lonely feeling away. It's not forever."
I saw the sympathy in her face and I wished I could have earned it. I had my child, and I was going to take hers away from her, but I had to keep working. Had to keep up the facade.
"I know, I've always loved kids. All my friends used to say that when we grew up I would be their constantly pregnant friend." This, at least, was true. "But I suppose that can't happen now." I paused, "With Nessie, was she like an ordinary child? I never really understood, she's so intelligent for someone who looks so young."
Bella laughed softly, "She's actually younger than she looks. Shortly after she was born we were afraid that she wouldn't live long at all, she grew so fast. Centimetres every day. Carlisle predicted she would only live for 15 years. But what happens is that she will grow at an amazing rate for six or seven years, and then stop whe she looks about eighteen." I tried to hold in my emotions when I thought about Samson growing up away from me, how old would he be before I got back to him? Would he even remember me?
"And Nessie's always been intelligent," Bella continued, "Even from the first time I held her, she was alert. She loved Tennyson can you believe! She's moved on to Shakespeare now, but I think he still has a special place in her memories." I laughed weakly,
"An eight-year-old who loves Shakespeare! She really is one of a kind!"
Bella smiled warmly at me, but then stiffened,
"They're back."

The others had arrived back with no news of the visitor. Part of me was pleased, my cover was intact. But when, on our next hunting trip, Emmett came across another famliar scent and wanted us all to follow it, I was filled with dread at the prospect of them coming face to face with my secret masters.
"They've gone North." Said Emmett, "Their trail is still fresh. We might be able to catch them if we go now." I couldn't disguise the horror on my face, and Esme came over to me.
"You don't have to come if you're frightened, we completely understand." She said gently, "Someone has to take Nessie home anyway."
"We can't just leave her alone with Nessie." Edward cut in, "If our quarry gets past us to the house she'll have no chance."
"Hey, don't worry about that." Jake said, "I'll get the pack running round the house. They'll be fine."
"Seriously!" Emmett cried, "We're not gonna catch anything if you lot sit around disscussing it for the next century - let's go already!"
"Come on Ness." I said, holding out my hand, "Let's go home." She took my hand gently and then turned to the rest of the family,
"See you later, don't get hurt." There was such sincerity in her eyes that even Emmett sobered up,
"Don't worry tyke. We can look after ourselves." Then they all turned and raced away into the trees. Nessie looked me worriedly, I stroked her hair.
"Hey, they'll be alright. Emmett's a tank!" She giggled and we made our way home.
The others were away for hours, and I had to carry Nessie up to bed when she fell asleep at the window, waiting anxiously for the others to return.

I looked at her sleeping form, and I had a sudden thought. Could now be the moment for me to take her? She looked so angelic as she slept, I didn't know if I could bring myself to do it. But then I thought of my own child, how much would he have grown in my absence? She sniffed in her sleep and I was pulled out of my reverie and realised I was still standing next to her bed. I was a woman torn in two. Half of me was screaming at me to take my chance while I had it, but another was yelling to leave this innocent child to sleep, safe with her family. I leaned in towards her, and I was surprised to see that I was shaking with nerves. So when I heard the front door open quietly I jumped up and ran downstairs, assuming a defensive crouch.
"Hey! Hey! Cool it!" I heard a familiar voice from the doorway, "It's just me, Seth" I relaxed as he walked cautiously into the room, hands held up, "You're not going to attack me, right?"
"No." I replied, "But I might if you don't stop looking do damn afraid!"
"Got it." He smiled, lowering his arms and coming over to me and slumping on the couch, "I've been sent to keep you company. Apparently the others don't need me running so we thought I should come see you. We figured you'd probably be a bit worried. Understatement of the century." He grinned at me and I sat down next to him.
"Well, much though I hate to spend my evening with a dog," I pretended to grimace, and he feigned offence, "I'm pretty glad you're here. I didn't fancy my chances against this mystery stalker."
"Don't worry, as a man it is my duty to protect the womenfolk!" He said, puffing out his chest. I tapped him gently on the shoulder, he winced.
"The womenfolk can look after themselves thank you very much" I replied indignatly, "Maybe just not me. Right now. Against this particular opponent. I bet I could take you though. Weedy little thing you are."
"I don't doubt it," he chuckled, "When Bella was a newborn she broke my collar bone."
"No way!" I exclaimed "Why?"
"Well she was actually going for Jake's neck, I sort of got in the way. Devotion to my alpha, you know."
"Sure sure." I said,
"You sound like Jake now! Bella went absolutely skitz when she found out Jake had imprinted on Nessie, but what made her go for the throat was when she heard him call her Nessie. As far as I can remember she said, "You named my baby after the Loch Ness monster?" Then went in for the kill. Though I can't really blame her, she was only about an hour old."
I laughed and tried to imagine Bella being vicious, especially towards Jake.
"So what's your story? If you don't mind me asking." I didn't know what it was, but I found it so hard to lie to him. Harder than lying to any of the Cullens, but I knew I had to do it,
"It's really not that interesting." I said, "I was out hiking when this really odd man came up to me. He told me I was about to die. Then he just bit me, I felt like I was being drained, but then suddenly he just stopped. I don't know why. The last thing I remember is seeing him running away. I'm a mystery, wrapped in a riddle, surrounded by an enigma." I tried to make my laugh sound lighthearted, but it didn't convince him. I could see the sympathy in his eyes. I was about ready to scream,
"Will everyone stop feeling sorry for me already!" I screamed, and he flinched away,
"Sorry. It's kind of hard not to you know."
"No, don't apologise. I just want to forget I was ever human. I just want to get on with my... well, not my life but you know what I mean."
I smiled weakly and he hesitantly touched my arm. His skin was flame on mine, but I liked the warmth. For an infinite second our eyes met and he leaned forward a tiny amount. Then,
"Nothing!" Emmett thundered from the doorway.

"We followed the scent for miles but they'd taken off into the water." Said Carlise, as Emmett sat down heavily and turned on the game, muttering profanities under his breath.
"I'm sure it was someone from the Volturi." Said Bella, running down the stairs from where she'd been checking on Nessie, "I recognise the scent, but I think it may have been someone I've never spoken to. I know I have smelled it before, but it's different to how I remember it so I don't recognise it completely."
"I know what you mean, " said Edward, "I think it must have been someone who was human when we last met them, I remember recogniseing your scent when you were first changed, but it being slightly different."
"Less mouthwatering?" Asked Bella
"No," replied Edward, slipping an arm around her waist, "less painful though."
"Surely the Volturi wouldn't have someone human working for them?" I asked. I too, had recognised the scent but hadn't been sure of it at first, and hadn't thought much about who it was, I'd been a little pre-occupied with worrying about the Cullens' safety. But then it hit me, apparently at the same time as it hit Edward,
"Gianna. I knew Aro did plan to change her. Maybe he's decided to do it sooner rather than later." For them, it was not good, but not bad news. For me, it was amazing. I found hope within myself.

Seth took off to tell the rest of the pack the news, and I ran back to the place where we'd picked up Gianna's scent, under the pretence of letting off steam, since I'd been so tense waiting for the Cullens to return. This was not completely a lie, my body actually felt as rock hard as it was. But this was not completely to do with my mission. I followed my own scent until I came to the field where we'd been hunting. I could still smell Gianna's scent faintly, and I followed it, my eyes scanning cautiously for any sign that she had left me a message. Eventually, my eyes fell on a small package well concealed in the roots of a large tree. It was almost invisible to anyone who wasn't looking for it. I ripped it open and two things fell out, a letter and a photograph, I opened the letter hurridly

Anna, I know you must be anxious to hear news of your son. I was sent last time to check up on your progress, and was glad to tell them of your success. This time, I thought I should leave you some reassurance that you still have something to fight for. Don't give in,
Gianna.

My hands trembling, I picked up the photograph. I thought my heart would break in two. The face that stared up at me was so breathtakingly beautiful I thought it couldn't be real. The little boy looked at least six months old, though I'd only been gone two weeks. His eyes were alert and curious, far too intelligent for a six-month-old. His hair was flame red, and stuck out in tufts from his head. I was relived to see he hadn't inherited any of his father's traits. If anyone looked at us together, they would have thought we were brother and sister. I breathed in deeply, and though the air whistled uselessly around my lungs it calmed me. I tucked the picture into the breast pocket of my jacket, along with the letter, and headed back to the Cullen house.

When I got back, they were still talking about Gianna's visit. I didn't want to be involved, but I sat and let it all wash over me. How could my baby have grown so quickly? From what Bella had told me I knew he would grow faster than an average child, but this? It was ridiculous. What if I never had another chance, if he was almost fully grown by the time I got back? Would they let that happen, let him live that long?
"I say we just keep an eye out from now on. There's no need to go bursting into Volterra demanding that they don't send people to Forks. It could just be that Aro is interested in how Nessie is growing." Alice said, desicively.
"But Alice.." Edward began
"No buts. You are being too dramatic, as usual. Besides, if there was some kind of impending doom, would I not have seen it?" Edward sighed, but seemed to give in to her, "Now onto more cheerful things. Anna. You're what? 16?" I nodded,
"Why?"
"Since you are actually sixteen and have not been so for more time than is normal..yet, we feel it is necessary for you to go to high school."
"High school?" I was shocked, "But aren't you worried I'll kill people or something?"
"You've shown more restraint even than Bella when she was a newborn. Besides, you have been seen by a couple of people and they'll be wondering why the Cullen's new member isn't attending." smiled Edward, I rolled my eyes,
"Alright, but if I kill anyone I'm holding you responsible!"

Alice laughed,
"Deal!"
We all heard approaching footsteps as Seth bounded into the room.
"Pack wants to know where you picked up the scent. Sam said I should come get someone to show us where it was picked up."
"Sure thing," Edward said, but didn't make to stand up, "Anna will show you." He smiled ruefully at me and I resisted the urge to make an obscene hand gesture at him. Seth blushed, hardly detectable under his dark skin.
"Come on then." I said, getting up, "I could do with a run anyway. Plus I finally get to meet the whole pack."
"Yeah, they're all curious to meet you, though they do know what you look like."
"How come?" I asked,
"Well, we can sort of read each others minds, when we're in our wolf form."
"People, these are the vital bits of information you leave out when you tell me stuff!" Everyone laughed,
"Come on then, lets go." We made our way to the front door and headed round the back of the house in the direction we'd gone earlier. As I rounded the corner I couldn't help being a tiny bit scared, sixteen massive wolves were standing in a huddle and, as one turned to look at me.
"Ok, so there's lots of you." I said, a chocolate brown wolf gave a sort of rasping bark that could have been a laugh.
