Part Four.

The journey seemed short, and surprisingly easy. I had run to the airport through the forest, and there I had come across a herd of deer. A thought struck me, what it Vampires could feed off animal blood too? I listened to the sound of their hearts, and heard once again that wet sound that made my throat burn. They didn't smell as good as Rebecca had, but I sensed they would sooth the ache in my throat. And they did. After draining two large males, I felt, not satisfied, but pacified. So when I entered the airport, the smell of all those humans didn't bother me as much. I was careful to change my lenses every three hours on the plane. I feined sleep for most of the journey, so the air hostesses wouldn't bother me. By the time the plane had landed in Seattle, I was thirsty again. I held my breath as much as possible, and resolved to find more deer before arriving in Forks. As I ran through the forest, I felt almost exhilerated. I'd never been much of a runner when I was human, but this was brilliant. I felt strong and in control, I tried not to think about what the Cullens might be like. But I thought the best way to succeed would be to make friends with them, if they were enemies of the Volturi, they were probably good people. I didn't want to take to many chances though, so when I recognised the scent of a Vampire, I slowed. Then another smell wafted towards me. It was less apetizing than the scent of humans, but better than the deer. I followed the scent, and emeged into a clearing. My new, sharp eyes immediatly found what I was looking for. A huge cat sat in a tree about 10 metres away from me. It was watching me warily. I sprang. It tried to fight me off, but its claws had no effect on my marble skin. I soon overpowered it and the ache in my throat receeded. I looked down and saw that though my skin was unharmed, my clothes had suffered a good deal. I looked into my bag and found that I had another set of clothes. I changed and tried to find that Vampire scent again. After a while I found it and began to follow it. I had not been running very long when I felt something. It was like there was a little creature in my brain, scuttling around. I shook my head, but nothing happened. Then I concentrated hard, and mentally flicked the bug away. It disappeared, and I continued. Soon I found myself by a river, I followed it until I came to a huge white house. The scent here was very strong. There was no doubt in my mind that I had found them. The Cullens. I had my story straight, but I was terrified as I approached the house and knocked three times on the front door.
It was opened by a breathtakingly beautiful woman, with deep golden eyes and long dark hair,
"Hello." She said, "We've been expecting you, come in."
Was she Alice? Did she know my mission? Would I ever see my son again? But then she smiled at me, and I guessed they must have caught my scent as I had caught theirs. I stepped over the threshold, into a surprisingly light room. the back wall was a huge window, light streamed in onto ten people gathered around the room.
Eight of them were obviously vampires, with pale white skin, all beautiful, but the one that caught me eye was the little girl. She must have been about eight years old, but exquisite, with deep chocolate brown eyes and bronze ringlets hanging to her waist. I would have guessed she was a vampire if I couldn't hear the flutter of her heart and the pumping of her blood, felt the warmth from her. She was just like my own child. My heart twinged as I looked at her, thinking about him. She looked back at me, her dark eyes curious. Then, she walked up to me, calm and sure and said, "Hello, I'm Renesmee, who are you?"
I instantly recognised the name, this was the girl must kidnap, take away from her family. A wave of remorse swept over me as I looked at her angelic face, but replied, "I'm Anna."
"Hello Anna. Shall I introduce you to my family?" I smiled, she was adorable.
"Alright then." She took my hand and led me to where all the others were assembled. She pointed to the woman who had let me in and said, "This is my momma, Bella. And my Daddy, Edward." She gestured to the man standing next to Bella, he was looking at me with interest. I wondered why.
"This is Auntie Rosalie and Uncle Emmett. Uncle Emmett likes to make jokes sometimes." The tall, dark man chuckled deeply, and the woman standing next to him smiled fondly at Renesmee. She was stunningly beautiful, even in the vampire world I'd never seen anyone as beautiful.
"This is Auntie Alice and Uncle Jasper." The woman, Alice, was small and dark, but she smiled widely at me. However, the man, Jasper, looked wary.
"This is My grand-daddy Carlise, and Grandma Esme." I grinned as I looked at them both, obviously too young to be grandparents. They smiled warmly back at me.
"And this is my Jacob." Said Renesmee, proudly. I looked at the man standing amongst the vampire family and was confused. I could see he was human, and I could hear his heart beating under his russet skin. But there was none of the temptation that other humans provided. His smell was not dissimilar to the smell of the deer, but it was less apetizing still. He looked at me in the same way that Jasper did, as though frightened I would strike at any moment. Sensing my confusion, Edward stepped forward,
"Jacob is a shape-shifter. He can transform into a wolf. He and his pack protect the surrounding area from vampire attack."
"Um, ok?" I replied, confused, "So how come you..?"
"Oh, yes, I forgot to mention. We are slightly different from other vampires you will have met, we think of ourselves as vegetarian. We only drink animal blood."
Jacob cut in, "And if you want to hunt, you'll go outside the boundary line please, the Cullens will show you where,"
"Wait." I said, "There's no need for that. I'll hunt with the Cullens if they don't mind."
"But, your eyes.."
"Oh, have my contacts gone again? Shoot. But what do my eyes have to do with anything?"
"They're red. If you're vegetarian, your eyes should be gold."
Edward interceed again, "She's a newborn, Jacob, surely you've noticed?"
"A newborn?" He grabbed Renesmee and pulled her behind him.
"What?" I asked, confused again.
"Have you never come across other vampires before?" Jasper asked
"No," I replied, time to tell my story, "I was bitten, but then just left in the forest. When I woke up I had no idea what was happening. I came across some hikers and I felt this, burnng in my throat, like I was dehydrated. I wanted to... but I couldn't bring myself... In the end I found a mountain lion, up in the forest. then I found your scent, and I followed it."
"Oh, my dear.." cried Esme, she ran to me and put her arms around me. I responded. I should have felt victorious, elated. I'd found my way in, easier than I'd expected, but I couldn't feel happy when I knew that I would soon betray them. Their trust. I would take away that precious child to save myself. Not just my self. My son. I couldn't forget that, I was doing this for him, too.

My first night with the Cullens was like nothing I'd ever experienced. We'd talked late into the night about their lives, and how they came to be a family. Their stories were fascinating, but Edward and Bella's was the most enthralling. I'd never thought that love could be so deep, but they were living (or at least breathing) proof that it could happen. Jacob had left once Renesmee had been put to bed, but the Cullens explained to me all about the wolves, and Jacob's relationship with Renesmee, or, as everyone seemed to call her, Nessie.
"It's not necessarily romantic," Edward explained, "Just an overwhelming desire to protect that person, and to be there for them. That person becomes your world, your reason to be."
"Wow," I breathed, "But surely in some cases the wolf falls in love with his imprintee?"
"Of course," Edwrad replied, "In fact, that is what happens in most cases. And, though I don't much like the thought, I would imagine that at some point it will happen with Jake and Nessie."
"Hmm.." I said, I thought about what Nessie would look like when she grew up. There was no doubt she would be beautiful, like her parents. If she evr did grow up, I thought, if I give her the chance. The thought sent a spasm of pain shooting across my face, and Edward suddenly moaned.
"How are you doing this?" He asked, he seemed, not angry with me, but agitated.
"Do what?" I replied, though I thought I knew what it was that was bugging him, after all, I hadn't been found out yet so I assumed I was successfully keeping him out of my head.
"Sheild your mind like that?"
"Sorry?" I said again, Bella jumped in,
"Edward can read minds." She said, I acted shocked and they seemed to buy it, "He can hear what people are thinking at any given time. However, he can't read yours, or mine for a matter of fact." This did shock me,
"How come?" I asked.
"Well, Edward isn't the only one who has an extra talent." She replied, "I have this sort of, layer inside my head that stops people getting inside it. It doesn't just work on Edward, either. There are other vampires who have powers that affect the mind, and I'm immune to them too."
"Do you think," pondered Carlisle, "that you and Anna could share the same power?" Edward shook his head,
"No," he said, surely, "You see, I could read her mind for a second, she was thinking about finding us, but then it was like she knew I was there, inside her mind, and then she just thought about getting me out, and suddenly I couldn't read her anymore. I tell you, this is like nothing I've ever come across!" A wave of memory came flooding back to me,
"The bug!" I cried, the others looked at me, confused, "When Edward read my mind, it was like there was a little bug crawling around inside my head. I could feel it. Then I sort of, I don't know how to explain it, I flicked it away."
The other vampires were looking at me with interest.
"I wonder if..." Carlisle muttered, "if you might have a sort of, adaptation power. Like you evolve really fast to fight off anything that might threaten you." I thought about that, it certainly applied to Jane. Having felt that pain once, I'd recognised it the second time and been able to fight it off.
"What if, though," Edward mused, "It's not just a mind thing, would Jasper work on her, for example."
"Jasper?" I asked, that was another one I didn't know about. Jasper looked bemused for a second, and then said,
"Can you feel this?" I saw I sort of mist coming towrds me, it was a faint blue colour, and it seemed to exude calm. But I was far to exited to be calm, I looked into the mist and I willed it not to calm me, I poured my exitedness into it, and to my surprise, it changed colour, it became a yellow/orange colour, and as it reached the other in the room I saw their faces light up, and felt their exitement like my own. Jasper made a whooshing sound between his teeth, "Well Damn," he said, "You are something new."
"What was that?" I asked.
"Calm," he replied, "I can alter the emotions of the people around me, except yours, of course." He half-smiled at me, and I smiled back.
The vampires looked at me in amazement and confusion, then Alice said cheerily, "Let's invite the Denalis over! I'm sure Eleazar will want to take a look at her!" Before I had time to be confused and ask you Eleazar was, the watery rays of early morning sunlight burst in through the glass wall, and the room light up, not from the sunlight, but from the rays bouncing off our skin like a million glinting diamonds.

It was noon on the second day, and I was playing hide and seek with Nessie in the garden, Jacob keeping a protective watch over her, when an unknown scent hit me. It was a vampire scent, and I turned questioningly to Jake.
"Denali's." He said, Nessie shouted with laughter,
"You've given yourself way now silly!" I chided, softly. Nessie was geniunely good at the game, and I was often left wondering where she was, it was different to playing with human children, covering their eyes and assuming they were invisible. She now bounced out from her hiding place between two low ferns and said,
"But I just can't wait to see them! Let's get back to the house!" My eyes flashed as I looked at her and said playfully,
"Race you!"

When we got back to the white house, there were five vampires standing in the living room. They too, had golden eyes like the Cullens. Nessie squealed and ran to them. They all hugged her, and a man with a ponytail picked her up and swung her around. She giggled and flung her arms around his neck,
"Easy squirt!" he joked, and the woman with cornsilk blonde hair sroked his arm affectionately. The woman with strawberry blonde hair was talking with Edward and Bella, and the Spanish-looking woman was now embracing Nessie fondly, but the second man was looking at me with a mixture of fear and awe. I assumed he was Eleazar, the man who could sense people's powers. I felt oddly estranged from the group, and went over to stand with Jacob in the doorway. There was something in the way he looked at me that suggested he didn't trust me. Though I didn't blame him, I wished he would stop slipping me sidelong glances, as though he was expecting me to spring at any moment. I became more and more agitated as he stood watching me,
"Look, I'm not about to attack anyone, I don't know what normal newborns are like, but I'm clearly not it. So you can stop looking at me like I'm about to flip out." Jacob looked shocked,
"No, it's not that, I'm just trying to work you out." I laughed once,
"You sound like Edward." He smiled at me and shook his head.
"Sorry, I guess I'm just a bit wired today. Recently I've been really protective of Nessie, I mean, more than usual." He grinned.
"Well I'm glad you're not like this all the time. I'm actually surprised Nessie doesn't live in plastic bubble." I joked, and as I met his eye we burst out laughing. Suddenly every eye was on us and we stuggled to contain ourselves. Alice skipped to the middle of the room and said chirpily,
"everyone, this is Anna. The reason you are all here. Anna, this is Tanya, Kate, Garrett, Carmen, and Eleazar." She pointed to the man with dark hair, and he inclined his head to me.
"I am honoured to meet you." he said, "I don't think I have ever met someone with such a unique power."

"I'm amazed. I didn't think something like this was possible!"
Jacob cut in, "Seriously spit it out, the suspense is killing me!" Eleazar raised his eyebrows slightly, but continued,
"Excuse me, but I genuinely am amazed. You see, Anna can controll the powers of those around her."
I was stunned. And judging by the looks on the faces of the other people in the room, I wasn't the only one.
"What do you mean by that, exactly?" asked Esme.
"Once she has experienced someone's power, she can recognise it and then when she experiences or feels it next she can controll it. She can simply block it if she wants to, but she can also harness and use it."
"So essentially she has all of our powers combined." Said Jasper, and I could definitely hear the fear in his voice. But it was nothing to the fear I felt myself. I was terrified. Of myself. What I could become. I was pulled out my reverie by Eleazar,
"No, she doesn't absorb as such. She can only harness the power if the vampire is using his or her power and if the vampire is near her." We all stood. Shocked. Then Emmett began to laugh. Then Edward joined in, I looked at him, confused.
"Emmett is imagining what it would be like if you faced Jane." He explained. Jane. I fought hard not to scream. I had left my son with her. My beautiful boy. Internally, I struggled to keep my face calm, and tried to appear interested. Carlisle answered the question I hoped was in my face,
"Jane is... a vampire wth quite a formidable power. She can cause indescribable pain to a person with nothing but her thoughts. But she's very sadistic about it. She takes any opportunity to excercise her power."
"She works for the Volturi." Edward said, "They are a sort of vampire royalty. They inforce our only Law - to keep the secret. The Volturi aren't.. fond of us. And we are not fond of them either. Shortly after Nessie was born, they wanted to kill her, under the pretense that she was dangerous. I think we'd all like to see Jane get a taste of her own medicine." He smirked. I tried to smile, but I couldn't keep it together any more.
"Excuse me," I muttered, and sped out the door.
"Should someone go after her?" I heard Alice ask,
"No." said Edward. "I expect she's overwhelmed. She's been through a lot recently."
I ran and ran until i began to get afraid I wouldn't find my way back. Then I sat down and began to sob. My body shook and I gasped great lungfuls of air as I did when I was human, but I felt no tears streaming down my face, my eyes were not hot. I was a shell, I thought bitterly, an empty shell. I was dead inside and out. How could I have ever agreed to this? Of course they wanted to kill Nessie, that beautiful, intelligent child. And I was going to hand her over to them, like the monster I was. Why? For my son. I had to remember that. All this was for him. I sat in the ferns until my body stopped shaking, and I thought I had some controll. Then I realised I wasn't alone. Rosalie stepped out from behind a tree and sat on the ground beside me.
"I know that when most people say they understand, they don't really. But I do. My life was taken fom me when I was at the height of my beauty and vivacity. I never wanted this life. I would have been so happy just to live a normal life, have children. I didn't have a choice. It was this or death. But I have Emmett now, and my family. You have to keep going."
"But I can't even cry. I'm not human, I'm a monster."
"You are not a monster. You are only a monster if you choose to be."
"For God's sake look at us. We're just... rocks. Cold, hard rocks!" I screamed, and I ran. I ran without even thinking where I might be headed. When I stopped I realised I wasn't far from the house, and a wave of remorse swept over me. I shouldn't have said the things I did to Rosalie, she was only trying to help. I turned and headded towards the house. I burst through the door,
"Rose I'm so sorry, I don't know what..." but I tailed off. The Cullens all looked round at me, but they weren't the only ones. Jake was there as well, and another boy. He was almost as tall as Jake, and had the same cropped hair and russet skin. He was staring at me with something that I couldn't quite make out. Edward coughed, he smiled just a little and said,
"Anna, this is Seth."

"Hi" we both muttered. I didn't know why but I was anxious not to look him in the eyes.
"Sorry if I've come at the wrong time. I wanted to meet the new arrival." He grinned at me, and I smiled back shyly.
"Seth's been a bit of a freak since he and Edward took out Victoria." joked Jacob, "I reckon he's the first wolf ever to be friends with vampire."
They all laughed, and I giggled weakly, and made my way over to Rosalie,
"I'm so sorry," I said, "I shouldn't have treated you like that, I didn't mean.."
"It's fine." Rosalie replied kindly, "I was ten times worse than you when I was newborn, ask Edward, he'll be only too glad to testify." She looked over at Edward who winked at us. We rejoined the group and Alice came bounding up to me, a smile stretching from ear to ear.
"I know something that'll make you feel better - a shopping trip!" She was almost bouncing as she said the words. I thought about all the times I'd gone shopping with my friends at our local Mall and I relished the thought of doing something normal, human. There was only one problem,
"I don't have any money." Alice rolld her eyes and made a tutting sound,
"Please! It's not like we were expecting you to pay."
"But I couldn't.." I began, but Jasper cut me off,
"It's Alice's purpose in life to be a personal shopper for anyone she can find. Besides, with her uncanny nack for stocks it's not like she'll be setting us back too much."
"Well, I don't know about that," Alice said with a twinkle in her eye, "I have great plans for her. Come on Anna, I already have to deal with Bella's shop phobia, I need a sister who'll go out with me and not moan the whole time!" I hadn't listened to the last part of that sentence, I was stunned,
"Sister?"
"If you want to." Esme said earnestly, "you don't have to stay, but there will always be a place for you here if you need it."
I was overwhelmed. This had to be the happiest moment since I'd arrived. I wished it could last, I knew that I couldn't stay forever, no matter how much I wanted to. But for now, at least I could be the people whom I had grown to love, even after such a short period of time.
"Of course I'll stay!" I cried, and I threw my arms around Esme and Alice.
"Umm, ouch!" said Alice, I recoiled instantly
"Sorry!" I said, "I'm just so excited." I turned to the rest of the Cullens and they were all beaming at me. Then I turned to Jake and Seth,
"Sorry Jake, you're going to have to put up with me for a while longer." He punched me lightly on the shoulder,
"I'll learn to live with it."
Before anyone could say anything more, Alice bounded over,
"If you're going to be an official Cullen now, you really are going to need a new wardrobe!"
"Alright!" I said, "We'll go out first thing tomorrow!"
Alice bounced on the spot and danced to Jasper, who gently put his arm around her.
"Happy now?" He asked softly.
"Of course." She replied, nestling into his shoulder.
An aura of contentment surrounded all of us, and it had nothing to do with Jasper. I thought I could never be this happy again. I was wrong, but that could only mean I would fall harder.

When Alice and I arrived home the next day, we had enough shopping bags to completely fill the Porsche. We tumbled through the door with our arms full of bags, giggling as we remembered how much the shop assistant in one of the stores kept staring at us.
"Is it always like that?" I asked,
"Mostly," replied Alice, nonchalently as she dumped the bags onto the sofa, "but it really has it's up-sides when you want something." She winked at me.
"Where's everyone else?" I wondered, the big house seemed strangly hollow and echoey without the usual ten occupants.
"Maybe this will tell us." sais Alice brightly, picking up a small peice of folded paper and opening it,

Alice,
We've gone hunting up by Goat Rocks, Emmett wanted to have a family bear hunt. Anna can put her things in my old room as I won't be needing it anymore. Although I am not sure I will have room in my wardrobe for all your new purchases! We will be back around nightfall.
Edward

Alice sighed, "I wish they'd waited, I could have done with a hunt. Oh well, let's get these things up to Edward.. well, your room now!"
We hauled the bags upstairs and attempted to fit them all into the wardrobe, they only just fit. We had gone back downstairs and were settling in to watch "Sense and Sensibility" one of my favourites picked from the Cullens vast collection, when we heard the door open. Bella came shooting over, with Nessie hanging around her neck.
"Were's everyone else?" I asked, concerned at the nervous look on her face,
"We were unning back and we caught a trail, someone we recognised. We think someone from the Volturi has been planning a visit."
If my heart had had beats, it would have skipped one. They were keeping tabs on me. I wondered who it had been, but I didn't want to think about the possibility of someone like Jane being within a hundred miles of my new family.
