As we sat on the plane I held Nessie in my arms. When the little seatbelt light pinged on again she began breathing a little heavily. I held her hand in mine whispered to her,
"It's alright, I won't ever let them hurt you."
"I know, Anna. I trust you." Her words warmed my heart, but I couldn't deny that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep that promise. I didn't know much about the ways of the Volturi, but I knew they were ruthless enough to do almost anything. Even to a helpless little girl. As the plane touched down she began to shudder, and I hugged her to me. She gave a little whimper.
"Shhh, shhh. I'm so sorry I had to do this, but can you be brave for me?"
"Of course, don't apologise. I'll be OK." She raised her tear-stained face to me and I gently wiped the tears from her rosy cheeks. She gave me a watery smile, and we left the plane.
I hired a car with little difficulty and I did my best to follow the path I had taken when I set off on my mission just a few months ago. How much things had changed. In just those few short months I had felt joy and suffered more than I had ever had before. But I didn't regret it for a moment. As we drew up to the walls of the city, excitement coursed through me. I would see my son soon. But it was tainted with dread, because I could lose something so dear to me at the same time.

We drove into the city with the imposing walls looming above us. I could tell Nessie was terrified, so I put my arm round her and squeezed her shoulder. When I turned my eyes back to the road, there was a figure standing at the side of the road, dressed in a deep black cloak. I recognised him immediately, and pulled over.
"Don't worry Nessie." I whispered, "I'll keep you close." We got out of the car stood facing Felix, he grinned at me.
"Well done Anna. I must confess I wasn't sure you'd have the heart for it."
I didn't waste any courtesy on him when I said,
"I want to see my son."
"Of course. You must be impatiant to see little Samson. Yes, Gianna relayed your message." He said upon seeing my shocked face. Then he leaned down slightly and said, in a quite different tone,
"Hello Renesmee, it's nice to see you again."
"Hello Felix," she replied, "I wish I could return the compliment." I couldn't help but admire her then. I smiled broadly at Felix, who looked momentarily angry, before his face assumed a carefree smile, and chuckled heartily.
"Why don't you accompany Anna and I up to the castle? Aro, Caius and Marcus are simply dying to see you!"
I couldn't help thinking that Aro, Caius and Marcus had different plans as to who would be dying, but I took Nessie's hand and we followed Felix through the dark streets. Eventually coming to a stop by a manhole cover that was horribly familiar to me.
"After you." said Felix.

Once more I journeyed through the dark, dank tunnel. This time fearing for far more than my own life. This time, I had something to stay alive for, which made the journey easier and yet much more terrifying. Nessie grasped my hand and I squeezed back gently, trying to comfort her. I didn't think it worked, but thus far she had managed to hold back tears or hysterics, something that I had been unable to do, and I was fourteen years her senior. When we finally entered the spacious reception, Rebecca sat behind the desk and stared at us as we crossed the room.
The closer we came to the tower room, the more nervous I became. I felt now that Nessie's hand in mine was comforting me. I heard Aro's voice before we followed Felix into the tower room,
"My dear ones, our friend Anna has returned to us, and I believe she will not dissappoint!" They were assembled as they had been upon my first arrival in Volterra, and all eyes were on me, the sense of deja vu was so strong I had to shake my head to clear it.
"Ah! Anna. I knew you would not fail me, see Caius, you have too little faith in my judgement!" The he seemed to acknowledge the presence of Nessie, so small in the midst of the intimidating black cloaked figures, "Renesmee, dear! I am so pleased to see you, how you have grown since we last met! Are you still enjoying the work of Lord Tennyson?"
"I am thank you." replied Nessie, without a hint of fear in her voice, "Are you still enjoying threatening to kill innocent children?" There was a stir around the circle and suddenly I felt that knife shooting towards Nessie, rage took me over, and I caught the knife, but this time I turned it upon its caster. Jane writhed on the floor, screaming with the pain she had attempted to inflict on Nessie. I walked towards her slowly.
"That proves it then, doesn't it?" I said, "What goes around, comes around." I released Jane, who remained on the floor looking up at me with anger and shame in her eyes, but she knew better than to try to attack me.
"You have learned to control your power, I see." said Aro, and he didn't sound displeased.
"Let's cut the crap, Aro. You know why I'm here."
"Right you are!" He exclaimed, "Gianna, why don't you fetch young Samson for us?" Gianna was moving towards the door when Caius spoke for the first time,
"My apologies for interrupting what I am sure is about to be a touching reunion, but Anna'a task is not yet over. She has succeeded thus far, but she has one more hurdle yet to jump, as it were."
"No!" I said, quickly. "I've done what you told me to do, I've brought Nessie here to you, surely she can go now!" It was a thin thread of a hope, but I clung to it like a lifeline.
"Unfortunately, my dear, Nessie is an integral part of the next stage of your task. She must not be allowed to leave."
"NO!" I screamed this time I ran towards Caius but the guard could evidently read my intentions in my face and before I was halfway across the floor I was being restrained by Felix and a man I did not recognise.
"You seem to be forgetting yourself, Anna, and your son." He gestured towards the door and I saw, emerging from it, Gianna, who held in her arms beautiful child, with fire-red curls and eyes that once more melted my heart.
"It's him or Renesmee now I'm afraid my dear." said Caius, and I understood immediately what he wanted me to do. I must choose which child lived, and which child died.

I sagged in the arms of the guards.
“No.” I said again, quietly this time. All the fight had gone out of me once this decision was before me.
“You have three hours. Then you will return here with a decision. Felix, show our guest to her... room. And let her take both the children with her.” The other man let go of me, but Felix kept a firm grip on my arm as he lead me from the room. Nessie slid her hand into mine and Felix motioned to Gianna to follow us. We went down a flight of dark stone steps, and though I couldn’t feel it, it must have been cold, because Nessie shivered. Felix stopped by a thick, wooden door which he opened. Inside, was a stone room. A cold, blank room with no furnishings. I turned to Felix with a question in my face and he smiled, gesturing into the room in a way that clearly stated this would be my home for the next three hours. My prison. He let go of my arm and Gianna handed me Samson. I buried my face in his hair and breathed in the sweet smell of him. Then I heard a slam, and looked back to see only dark wood. But I heard Felix through the door of my cell,
“Three hours, Anna. Three hours.”
I slid down the wall and sat on the floor, my child still in my arms. Nessie came and sat beside me, resting her head on my shoulder.
“It’s going to be alright.” She said in a tiny voice. “Isn’t it?” I couldn’t lie to her in so grave a situation, but neither did I have the heart to tell this sweet, loving girl, that she may only have three short hours left of life. No. I could not let that happen. Whatever the consequences, I had to keep her safe. To keep them both safe. I made no reply to Nessie, but kissed the top of her head and said,
“I’m sorry, Nessie. So sorry. I’m sorry I took you away from your family. I’m sorry I took you to this terrible place. I’m...” she interrupted me,
“Samson? Are you pleased to see your mother again?” Samson turned his big eyes to her, and nodded once. She smiled, “And I’m sure you’ll enjoy being with her for a long time.”
“Nessie don’t...” I began but she cut me off again.
“I understand, Anna. He’s your son. My mother would do the same for me, and I can't judge you for it.” I knew she couldn’t be as brave as she sounded and sure enough, when I looked down at her, her eyes were full of tears, a few of them rolled down her face and Samson reached towards her, wiping them away clumsily. She smiled at him, trying to reassure.
“I won’t let either of you go. Ever.” I lowered my voice so I could barely hear it myself, making sure Felix standing sentinel outside the door could not hear, “When I give you the signal, you must take Samson and get as far away from here as you can. Your family will have come to get you by then I am sure. Take him to them; I am sure they won’t punish him for his mother’s sins.”
Her face was a mask of shock as she realised what I was going to do,
“You ca..” she began, but I would hear no argument,
“Do as I say.” I said, stern for the first time, and she fell silent, nuzzling against my side further as I rocked Samson in my arms, while I waited for Felix to open the door and lead me to my final battle.
