Once more I journeyed through the dark, dank tunnel. This time fearing for far more than my own life. This time, I had something to stay alive for, which made the journey easier and yet much more terrifying. Nessie grasped my hand and I squeezed back gently, trying to comfort her. I didn't think it worked, but thus far she had managed to hold back tears or hysterics, something that I had been unable to do, and I was fourteen years her senior. When we finally entered the spacious reception, Rebecca sat behind the desk and stared at us as we crossed the room.
The closer we came to the tower room, the more nervous I became. I felt now that Nessie's hand in mine was comforting me. I heard Aro's voice before we followed Felix into the tower room,
"My dear ones, our friend Anna has returned to us, and I believe she will not dissappoint!" They were assembled as they had been upon my first arrival in Volterra, and all eyes were on me, the sense of deja vu was so strong I had to shake my head to clear it.
"Ah! Anna. I knew you would not fail me, see Caius, you have too little faith in my judgement!" The he seemed to acknowledge the presence of Nessie, so small in the midst of the intimidating black cloaked figures, "Renesmee, dear! I am so pleased to see you, how you have grown since we last met! Are you still enjoying the work of Lord Tennyson?"
"I am thank you." replied Nessie, without a hint of fear in her voice, "Are you still enjoying threatening to kill innocent children?" There was a stir around the circle and suddenly I felt that knife shooting towards Nessie, rage took me over, and I caught the knife, but this time I turned it upon its caster. Jane writhed on the floor, screaming with the pain she had attempted to inflict on Nessie. I walked towards her slowly.
"That proves it then, doesn't it?" I said, "What goes around, comes around." I released Jane, who remained on the floor looking up at me with anger and shame in her eyes, but she knew better than to try to attack me.
"You have learned to control your power, I see." said Aro, and he didn't sound displeased.
"Let's cut the crap, Aro. You know why I'm here."
"Right you are!" He exclaimed, "Gianna, why don't you fetch young Samson for us?" Gianna was moving towards the door when Caius spoke for the first time,
"My apologies for interrupting what I am sure is about to be a touching reunion, but Anna'a task is not yet over. She has succeeded thus far, but she has one more hurdle yet to jump, as it were."
"No!" I said, quickly. "I've done what you told me to do, I've brought Nessie here to you, surely she can go now!" It was a thin thread of a hope, but I clung to it like a lifeline.
"Unfortunately, my dear, Nessie is an integral part of the next stage of your task. She must not be allowed to leave."
"NO!" I screamed this time I ran towards Caius but the guard could evidently read my intentions in my face and before I was halfway across the floor I was being restrained by Felix and a man I did not recognise.
"You seem to be forgetting yourself, Anna, and your son." He gestured towards the door and I saw, emerging from it, Gianna, who held in her arms beautiful child, with fire-red curls and eyes that once more melted my heart.
"It's him or Renesmee now I'm afraid my dear." said Caius, and I understood immediately what he wanted me to do. I must choose which child lived, and which child died.
