Personally, I like Simpsons, Futurama, South Park and Family Guy/American Dad at the very bottom of the list.

Simpsons has jokes that can appeal to anyone. The storyline, humour and everything else are just great.
Futurama is the same, but with more sci-fi references

Family Guy? pfft. As most of you said, it IS dick/fart jokes. It lacks a lot of storyline/story-telling, the humour is probably directed more to people who are older..and a lot of crap there just makes it horrible. Its what I tell my friends; Family Guy is a MORE mature version of Spongebob, and a crappy version of Simpsons.

i believe this is one of the hardest comparison in TV history.
the simpsons is a show which relates a lot to life showing you more day to day situations that happen to people, while family guy just shows the stupidity that goes on in this country.
these 2 shows come from different points, they have nothing to do which each other, but at the end they both have the same goal; MAKE US LAUGH. and i believe they both reached that goal, and passed it by faaaaaaaaar
they are both amazing, and in a scale of 1 to 10, i give 10 to both, and lets stop comparing them and lets start enjoying them; because family guy is not so old, but the simpsons have been out for over 20 years, so we dont know how longer they will make us laugh, cause remember that they said thy would stop making them after the movie, which was the best movie of the decade. Hopefully they will never stop.

so in conclusion, lets enjoy more and compare less.

at the end of the day they were both rip offs of a sort. family guy ripped off the simpsons(stupid dad, 3 kids, etc.), simpsons ripped off of the flinstones( in a manner of speaking again the fathers character is fat and stupid with a bad temper), and finally the flinstones was a rip off of the honeymooners

That's like saying "Who's the better band? The Beatles or Oasis?"

The Family Guy wouldn't exist if it weren't for the Simpsons, and even with the new Simpsons episodes paling in comparison with the best of the past (seasons 3-6) they are still far better than the very best family guy episodes.

I think that of the other adult cartoons that sprung up in the wake of the Simpsons, South Park is the only one that doesn't owe a direct nod to the Simpsons. And Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of South Park) acknowledge that the Simpsons paved the way for modern TV sitcoms. They also raise the point that it's hard to do a storyline that the Simpsons didn't already do 12 years ago.

The Simpsons is to modern TV what Optimus Prime is giant, transforming, robotic trucks. And that's saying something.

Simpsons is first because as one can see that Family Guy obviously steals from The Simpsons, but I like both but for very different reasons. I also really enjoyed Futurama when it was on. So my favourites would have been as followed: 1. Simpsons 2. Futurama and then 3.Family Guy. Now it is just Simpsons and Family Guy. Simpsons has an intelligent classy style of humour whereas Family Guy is more of a shock value as humour, which works well, however, I don't think it could ever surpass The Simpsons.
