As my fellow die-hard LOST fans, I suspect that you all remember the episode "The Other 48 Days", in which the tail section survivors are given a formal introduction and their experiences from the day of the crash leading up to the current timeline of the show (at that time, 48 days in) were revealed.
As I hope you all remember, Ana-Lucia's foil for the better half of this episode was a man named Nathan. A person who in general came off as a shifty type of guy, always dodging questions that might give up information about himself and so forth, Nathan was not exactly the trustworthy type. This is what led Ana-Lucia to throwing him in the tiger cage and trying to starve the truth out of him.
What I'm wondering is, who exactly was Nathan? He said he was from Canada and on a business trip, but he stayed behind to do some sightseeing. Unfortunately for Nathan, LOST has a long history of using Canada as a background for liars: Ethan Rom said he was from Ontario, Ben used a Canadian passport when he was traveling post-Donkey Wheel, and Locke's fake ID ('Jeremy Bentham') was also Canadian. I suspect that this is because Canadians, when traveling, have an easier time slipping under the radar than others because of our nations' reputation, but regardless...
Was Nathan telling the truth, or was he lying? Who is he? Obviously the writers are not likely going to revisit this, because they don't have the time and it's a minor part of the story. But I feel that there's still a lot of unanswered questions about this man. Obviously he was not an Other, or Goodwin probably wouldn't have killed him... but who was he?
Speculate away. I'm interested in hearing -- or, rather, reading -- what other viewers think.
