Hey, maybe I missed it(very possible). Did they ever explain what that mysterious satalite, looking thing was that was infecting all of the Cylons and killing them on the basestar? What do you all think that was, and what was its purpose? If they explained it just say so, otherwise I would love to hear your thoughts.

It was explained.
It was a virus to which humans were immune because we had the antigens necessary to fight the sickness, but Cylons didn't.
furthermore - there was a plan to 'execute the infected cylons" next to a basestar so that the cylons and their sickness would download into the basestar. The plan being that these cylons would transmit the desease to the others and hence all cylons would face extinction.

The plan was foiled by Helo (yay - good ol Humane Helo) who killed the cylons before the Galactica could get close to a basestar.

Thats clearly not what he was asking for.

No Jon, they haven't mentioned it again since that one episode it was introduced. No idea yet on why it was there, etc. I suspect 1 of 2 things will happen with it. 1) they'll forget all about it and pretend it never happened. 2) What ever happens or is revealed in the next few episodes regarding earth, etc., will put the satellite thing into perspective and make sense out of it.

Really? I thought they did explain it. I thought they said it was meant to be like a beacon left by the original 13th colonisers, so that anyone who followed would know they were on the right track to Earth. And they definatley explained the virus as just being chance; it wasn't left there intentionally to kill cylons, it just happened to be on the satillite when the cylons brought it aboard. The humans who left it there wouldn't have even known about it since they were naturally immune. so it wasnt really a "cylon killing machine".
At least thats the general impression i got. But Im usually wrong about these things :)

And I think the leadership in BSG has decided against using chemical warfare on the cylons, they would have also needed to find a way of infecting them while they're still on their ships rather than just blowing them up. Blowing them up seems to be the easier method than trying to sneak it into their ship.

Sneaking it onto the resurrection ship when they were retreiving Xena would be pointless as it would have affected Athena and Xena, plus they did blow up their last resurrection ship making all Cylons mortal hence making the field more level and the satellite would have to be stored somewhere else as they werent gonna need it.

It was not a beacon, more like a dustbin, to left by 13th tribe containing a kind of plague.
due to large genetic pool of humans, virus was not effective. but 7 cylon models share a very narrow dna pool (only 7 individuals and cyborgs like hybrid and raiders) which didnt live long enough to develop mutations.

And i wonder what will happen to all cylons on earth, our blue planet is well known for developing diseases.

And about final 5, why werent they infected?

Hey, thank you for responding to my question about the virus. I personally agree with you when you said they will forget all about it. Thanks again

No one knows anything about the final 5, so they could be immune as well. Just like they can have babies with other cylons!
