Hello all!

I have been getting some.. actually.. rather rude reports in regards to Angel's namesake so I wanted to make a post to clear the air. It is popular belief that Angel was named by his baby sister. I am always up to debate something that is questionable but this is confirmed in IMDB with this quote from the trivia sections.
"Angel got his name because his baby sister invited him in, thinking he was an Angel that had returned to her. After he killed her, Darla named him Angelus, the Latinate for "Angel"."

strangely enough, i just watched this episode in one of my frequent re-watchings!! it's in the one where Kate's father dies - the whole episode is full of flashbacks

Alright. So, I happeend to be watching "Darla" (Episode 6) yesterday, and the Master does mention how Darla named Angel "Angelus", which is the Latin version of Angel. I assume he just started going by "Angel" after he recieved his soul, because it was more modern.

I am still curious, though, how he originally was called "Angel". I wonder where this information about his sister originally naming him is from. Anyone know? Also, why wouldn't Darla just so ahead and call him Angel? Why Angelus? It's a good question.

actually if you go back to Angel pre spinnoff on Buffy you hear that his name in Angelus his parents named him that and wikepidia has as much fact as my dog does

Angel's Birth Name is Liam. That was his Human name. When he was ravaging through Europe after Darla sired him he adopted the name Angelus, just like Spike changed his name from WIlliam when he joined the crew.

But who started calling him "Angel"? Darla?

This is going off of memory, but the story with Angel's sister is true. He took the name because his sister believed him to be an angel returning to her.

I can't tell you what episode it was from, because this is just going on memory. I remember it being said either by Angel himself in one of his many "I hate myself" monologues, or by Darla in one of her many "How ironic Angel's story is" rants.

Although I do remember the scene where it shows the flashback of him killing his family, I don't think it showed his sister saying this... But I could be wrong. If it was, that episode is near the end of Season One and is called "The Prodigal".

Someone is borrowing my first season, or else I'd check myself.
